Maxim's 2009 Charitable Foundation's recipient, Bobby Nawrath, was born with a rare genetic disorder characterized by craniofacial deformities known as Treacher Collins syndrome. This disorder is found in 1 in 10,000 births.

The signs of this disorder vary greatly, ranging from almost unnoticeable to severe. Most affected patients have under developed facial bones, which result in a sunken appearance in the middle of the face, a prominent nose, and a very small jaw and chin. Some people with this condition are also born with a cleft palate and malocclusion of the teeth. In severe cases, the chin may displace the tongue of a new born sufficiently to cause obstruction of the oropharynx and potentially life-threatening respiratory problems.

Bobby is now 4 years old and has under gone multiple surgeries since his birth. Bobby's remarkable progress thus far is due to the dedication of his parents, Kelly and James Nawrath. From the beginning, Bobby's parents have had to raise funds for his rehabilitation, supplies and travel, as well as the spiraling cost of health insurance.

Bobby has the long-term potential for an independent and productive life, but he will require more surgery in the future and a tremendous amount of care. The Maxim Charitable Foundation was proud to provide the Nawraths with funds to offset the expense of future surgeries and medical services.
